Winter is here, Christmas is close or Thanksgiving has just passed for some. The time of when Spotify unleashes the dawned upon reflection of our taste gets thrown in our face.

A breath of fresh air or sheer embarrassment is always a sign of a great Spotify wrapped. But why is it such a big deal?

Some studies have shown that tastes in music solidify when you’re young and rarely change. (I’ve been a fan of the same five songs since I was 12) So that goes without saying. However in the age of music trends and social media, your top artist makes you a subject of judgement by others. Encouraged to share through the platform itself, it’s an appreciable effort from the Swedish Company; loved by many.

The campaign aims to reflect and celebrate the real feelings, experiences and listening habits, both fun and embarrassing, that both listeners and creators had in 2023.

For the nostalgics or hardcore swifties it’s a wonderful experience to be able to reflect on your year in Music. The good times and the bad, it’s a form of self-awareness that we are lucky to have, especially in terms of the new addition of Wrapped this year. Location. Your taste is heard by millions of people across the world. Someone out there has similar or even identical playlists to you. Music is a language spoken by many and Spotify’s new element perfectly captures this.

This is my recommended city. Certainly not a common one i’ve seen like Berkeley. Although still pretty cool!

I hope others see the beauty in Wrapped and I look forward to it every year. It’s a great way to see your taste in music grow and venture towards viral TikTok songs or obscure underground Hip Hop or even Ethiopian Jazz (I did get a message from someone who told me this genre didn’t make it to his wrapped and he was gutted) But hey, if that doesn’t motivate you to broaden your music. I don’t know what will.

Wrapped is truly a gift for us from Spotify and I think it’s truly a genius, modern concept.
